Open Letter By Sean Murphy: Memorial Day, a Tough Decision, Liberty and Justice will Prevail

Dear friends and colleagues:

It is no secret around town I considered throwing my hat in the ring this election season. I was humbled by the support I received to ‘make a run for it’ in a legislative race.

Those first few weeks were exciting—meeting with donors and supporters, discussing hot voter issues and constitutional law, and exploring the decision to represent people of the great state of Wyoming. I think some folks come to decisions to run for elected office quickly, saying, I need to run!— it’s time for a change!—or something to that effect. But it was not like that for me. It was a tough decision. I thought about We the People and the responsibility to represent them with all my heart and mind in public office. Underneath the initial wave of excitement churned a reluctance; it was my son.

My son’s health challenges are an ever present reality and reminder that my ultimate responsibility is to him as a palliative parent. Through a lot of prayer and discernment, I came to a place parents and caregivers know well, especially those with sick children, and parents of children who have passed away. We are parents first and everything else second. From there, the decision became clear. I’m going to be there for my son with everything he is going through.

I’m writing this today, on Memorial Day, because every year I make this a day of reflection and service. It is a day to look back as a way to look ahead, hopefully share a bit of perspective, and reaffirm personal commitments to who and what matters most in life. It’s one of two days a year to be focused on service to veterans and remember those we have to thank for the beer, barbecue, speaking English, and freedoms we share as Americans—those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we could make free decisions about faith, family, and the pursuit of health and happiness.

It has been the greatest honor of my life being a hospice volunteer in the VA. It is humbling today — just as it was more than a decade ago when I first began — to be able to serve at the bedside of veterans. I’m proud of the Cheyenne VA. It is one of the finest VAs in the country. Maybe the finest!

It might sound strange, but both being a VA hospice volunteer and a bitcoin miner (litigating against Chinese conglomerates and their army of New York led lawyers) has reminded me what matters this election season as an American—that the price of freedom isn’t free and that we must be vigilant in defense of our rights and values.

Today, let us remember the power that rests in liberty and truth, what was sacrificed, and who have to thank for what we hold dear— as Americans (and bitcoin miners!) — in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Thank you everyone for your support and believing in us at Bison. Keep the faith liberty and justice will prevail.

Sean Murphy
